What Are Injectable Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers, or wrinkle fillers, are gel-like, soft substances that consist of hyaluronic acid. This molecule exists naturally in our body, and nearly 50% of it is found in the skin.
As we age, hyaluronic acid production in the human skin decreases, leading to loss of skin elasticity. This loss causes the epidermis to become thinner, making smile lines, crow’s feet, brow furrows, and frown lines more apparent.
The hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers comes to replenish the skin’s hyaluronic loss that occurs naturally in our face when we grow older. As a result, dermal fillers can add volume, soften facial wrinkles and creases, enhance the face’s contours and restore patients’ youthful appearance.
In addition to rejuvenating the face and delaying the need for plastic surgery, dermal fillers can also enhance the result of previous cosmetic procedures, such as a facelift. All in all, the use of dermal fillers is a highly effective and painless way to look younger without plastic surgery!
Dermal fillers are ideal for smoothing out wrinkles in the following areas:
- Nasolabial folds (between the upper lip and nasal vestibule)
- Marionette lines below the mouth corners
- Tear trough deformity in the cheek-lower eyelid junction
- Temporal area (at sides of the head)
- Around the eyes
The results are temporary and usually last up to a year. However, they may last even more in some cases, depending on the type of filler used. No special treatment is needed after the procedure other than regular skincare.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid In The Skin?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance found in every tissue of the human body, but the highest concentration of it (almost 50%) is present in the face’s skin. Hyaluronic supports the formation and maintenance of collagen, with these two substances having a significantly positive impact on the face’s appearance.
Hyaluronic acid helps skin cells be healthy and survive longer. It makes the epidermis thicker, prevents the buildup of dead skin and protects the face from free radicals generated by UV exposure. It also enhances skin moisture, firmness and smoothness.
Today, HA is safely produced in the laboratory to create dermal fillers that help men and women maintain a fresh and beautiful look.

What our patients say!
What Does Dermal Fillers Injection Involve?
Step 1: Pre-injection Stage
Dr Stavrou’s specially-trained medical staff cleans the patient’s skin thoroughly with an antibacterial agent and applies local anesthetic cream to numb the area of interest. Many dermal fillers include a mild anesthetic called lidocaine, which helps minimize discomfort during and after treatment.
Step 2: Dermal Filler Injection
Dr Stavrou uses disposable, fine needles (syringes) with blunt microcannulas to insert tiny amounts of dermal filler into the patient’s face, beneath the epidermis. The injection process takes just a few seconds per site of treatment. After the injection is complete, the doctor performs a light massage on the treated areas and evaluates the result. Additional filler may be added if needed.
The dermal filler injection duration depends on the number of areas to be treated. It might last from 15 minutes up to an hour.
Step 3: Clean Up, Recovery & Results
The medical staff cleanses the treated area and offers the patient an ice pack to reduce potential swelling and bruising and alleviate discomfort. Patients can resume their everyday activities, and even return to work immediately after the procedure. Skin improvement will be noticeable on the same day or a few days later.
Sometimes, one treatment is not enough for patients to achieve the desired results. Depending on how your skin reacts to the fillers, you may need an additional treatment sooner than one year after the first injection.

FAQs for Facial Dermal Fillers
What is the best facial filler?
There are several types of facial fillers available, but patients should trust only those approved by the FDA.
The most popular dermal fillers are:
- Hyaluronic acid - Juvederm Filler
- Calcium hydroxylapatite - Radiesse Filler
- Polylactic acid - Sculptra Filler
- Polyalkylimide - Aquamid Filler
- Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA) - Bellafill Filler
Are face fillers safe?
Dermal fillers’ injection is totally safe when performed by a licensed and trusted doctor who has experience in cosmetic procedures and uses FDA-approved products.
Request and read the patient labeling information on the dermal fillers your doctor has chosen for you. Do not buy fillers sold directly to the public from online websites or physical shops. You can buy FDA-approved fillers only with a prescription. Do not inject yourself with dermal fillers or use fillers for body contouring.
Dermal fillers are safe and effective only in the right hands.
How long does dermal fillers in face last?
The results of dermal fillers are temporary and may last up to a year, or even more in some cases. This depends on the area of treatment, the product used and the patient’s health condition.
The denser the product and the deeper it is injected, the longer the dermal filler results will last. However, that is not always the case.
Patients who want to maintain their youthful and fresh appearance can ask their plastic surgeon to repeat the treatment when needed.
A more permanent option for a fuller look is fat injections.
Can fillers permanently change your face?
FDA-approved dermal fillers are absorbable and offer temporary results, thus they cannot change your face permanently.
For permanent results, consult your doctor about fat injections and plastic surgery, such as brow lift, necklift o facelift.
Which is better: toxins or fillers?
Toxins and dermal fillers are equally used to rejuvenate patients’ look by smoothing out the wrinkles, particularly on the face. Both treatments are injected into the skin by specialized cosmetic surgeons and the results can last up to a year.
Toxins are primarily used to treat dynamic wrinkles that occur naturally between the eyebrows, around the eyes and the mouth. Toxins relaxes the muscles near the wrinkles and reduces their movement. It is not used for fine lines caused by collagen breakdown. The results will be more noticeable within a couple of weeks.
On the other hand, dermal fillers promote collagen production and restore lost volume in different face and body areas. The results are immediately available.
Dr Stavrou will examine your individual situation, skin condition and expectations, and advise you on which of the two options is more suitable for your unique case.
