Overview
The flexor and extensor tendons control finger movement. When one is severed or ruptured by trauma it needs prompt repair.
Surgery reconnects the damaged tendon using specialised suturing technique. That is usually followed by rehabilitation therapy, which is what determines how much motion and strength are recovered.
Risks and considerations
Repairing a divided or damaged tendon in the hand carries the general risks of surgery together with risks specific to tendon healing. A repaired tendon is at its weakest in the early weeks, and the most important risk is that it ruptures again — which is why a carefully followed hand-therapy and splinting programme is central to recovery, and why overusing the hand too soon is discouraged. Stiffness and adhesions, where the tendon sticks down and cannot glide freely, are common and can limit movement; occasionally a further operation to release them is needed. Full return of movement and strength is worked towards but not guaranteed. Nearby nerves may also have been injured at the time of the original wound.
