Nasolabial fillers typically last from six months to a little over a year. The range is wide because duration depends on the product used, how quickly your body metabolises it, and how it was placed.

What the treatment addresses

Nasolabial fillers treat the creases running from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth. These folds deepen as collagen is lost with age.

The treatment restores lost volume and softens the transition between the nose, mouth and cheek.

The procedure

Administration takes about 30 minutes. It begins with assessment of the facial anatomy, followed by injection at planned points. Local anaesthesia is commonly used.

Recovery is limited and normal activities can be resumed shortly afterwards.

Sun exposure without protection, smoking and intense physical activity all accelerate the breakdown of hyaluronic acid in the skin.

Injection technique

How the filler is placed affects both the appearance of the result and its durability. Accurate placement in the correct tissue plane reduces the risk of uneven distribution or migration, both of which shorten the useful life of the treatment.

When a top-up is due

The folds reappear As the filler resorbs, the creases become apparent again, first on smiling and then at rest.

Asymmetry Filler sometimes resorbs unevenly because of differing muscle activity between the two sides. Where one side retains more volume than the other, rebalancing is appropriate.

Loss of volume The transition between cheek and upper lip becomes flatter or less defined.

Change in skin texture Less commonly, some patients notice the treated area feeling less elastic.

Hydration Applying a moisturiser twice daily supports the skin. Well hydrated skin holds hyaluronic acid based filler better.

Sun protection Ultraviolet exposure degrades filler material and damages skin. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, including on overcast days.

Diet

Limit salt Excessive salt causes fluid retention, which can alter the appearance of the filler.

Antioxidants Foods rich in antioxidants help counter free radicals that degrade collagen.

Exercise

Regular physical activity supports circulation and skin health. Avoid strenuous workouts immediately after treatment, as raised body temperature accelerates metabolic processes and can reduce filler lifespan.

Follow-up

Consultation at intervals allows assessment of how the treated area is changing and whether a top-up is required.
