Overview
What chin augmentation does
Chin augmentation aims to improve the look of an under-projected, small chin and restore balance between the facial features. A custom-fitted silicone implant is placed on the chin’s bone to give it more projection.
Chin implants are small and solid, made from silicone, and moulded to fit around the chin bone. They are very similar to the natural chin bone but vary in size and shape. Dr. Stavrou will advise which implant size and contour is right for a given case. Once in place, chin implants feel like natural bone.
What the operation involves
Anaesthesia Local anaesthesia and light sedation, performed by a certified anaesthesiologist. If the procedure is combined with rhinoplasty, general anaesthesia is necessary.
Incision and implant placement The surgeon makes a small incision inside the mouth, or hides it in the chin crease. The implant is inserted and fitted around the jaw bone through this incision.
Closure The incisions are closed with sutures or skin adhesives.

Recovery
Most patients experience minimal discomfort and recover within a week. Light activities can start from the first day after surgery, with more strenuous exercise permitted after three to four weeks.
It is an outpatient procedure, so there is no overnight stay unless it is combined with another operation such as a rhinoplasty or neck lift. Dr. Stavrou gives precise instructions for recovery.
Patients typically need to follow a diet rich in liquids. They should sleep face up with the head elevated for a minimum of one to two weeks, to protect the incision and reduce post-operative swelling. Skincare and sun protection are also necessary during the recovery period.
The result is long-term, and there is always the option to remove the implant.
Risks and considerations
Chin augmentation carries the general risks of surgery alongside risks specific to a facial implant. Swelling and bruising are expected in the first weeks. Temporary numbness of the lower lip and chin can occur while the nerves recover and is usually short-lived. Risks specific to the implant include movement of the implant, infection around it and, uncommonly, the need to remove or exchange it; over a long period an implant can also affect the bone beneath it. Asymmetry, and a result that does not match the patient's sense of proportion, are the other considerations, which is why implant size and position are planned against the whole face at the consultation rather than decided in isolation.
Questions patients ask
How long does chin augmentation last?
Chin implants are solid and durable, so they do not shift or change position, and the result is not affected by the natural ageing process. Only trauma or injury to the face could damage a chin implant.
Does chin augmentation improve the jawline?
Chin implants improve the size, shape and projection of the lower jaw and help the contour of the jawline and neck. Patients whose concern is loose skin, relaxed muscles or excess fat along the jawline from ageing are better served by a facelift, a neck lift or neck liposuction.
Is chin augmentation painful?
The operation is performed under local anaesthesia and sedation, and post-operative pain is mild. A feeling of discomfort is normal and is controlled with the pain medication prescribed by your surgeon.
Can your body reject a chin implant?
It is exceptionally rare for a patient to reject a chin implant, because silicone implants are inert in the human body.
Is chin augmentation safe?
It is a safe procedure when performed by an accredited, experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon, and when the pre-operative and post-operative instructions are followed. Patients whose incision is inside the mouth need to be particularly careful, as bacteria accumulate in the mouth and can cause infection.
