Chin Augmentation (Chin Implant Surgery)
Cyprus, Greece and Malta
The chin is a prominent feature of our face. The more well-defined and symmetric with the rest of the face it is, the more attractive the person looks.
With chin augmentation surgery, patients with a weak or recessed chin can restore their confidence and improve facial harmony.
Chin augmentation can be combined with other facial procedures, such as rhinoplasty, in order to magnify the size of the chin and, at the same time, minimize the size of the nose. The combination of chin enhancement and nose job is called Profile Surgery.
Alternative terms for chin augmentation are genioplasty or mentoplasty.
What Is Chin Augmentation Surgery?
Chin augmentation is a type of plastic surgery for the face that aims to improve the look of an under-projected, small chin and restore an attractive balance between facial characteristics.
The plastic surgeon places a custom-fit silicone implant on the chin’s bone to give it more projection.
Chin implants are small and solid, made from silicone, and molded to fit around the chin bone. They are very similar to the natural chin bone, but vary in size and shape. Dr Stavrou will let you know which implant size and contour is right for your case to correct the look of a small chin and achieve a natural-looking, enhanced chin.
Once in place, chin implants feel like natural bone and create a beautiful and symmetric jaw structure.
What Does Chin Augmentation Surgery Involve?
Step 1: Anesthesia
The first procedural step is local anesthesia and light sedation performed by a certified anesthesiologist. If combined with a nose job, general anesthesia is necessary.
Step 2: Skin Incision & Implant Placement
The surgeon makes a small skin incision inside the mouth or hides it in the chin crease. The plastic surgeon inserts the chin implant and fits it around the jaw bone through this incision.
Step 3: Closing the Incision
The surgeon closes the incisions with sutures or skin adhesives.
What Are The Benefits of Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation corrects the problem of having a small chin and boosts patients’ confidence and self-esteem. Other chin augmentation benefits may include:
- Improves shape and size of chin
- Brings it in better proportion with the neck, jawline, cheeks and forehead
- Corrects a recessed chin
- Achieves an attractive, natural-looking chin
- Helps achieve harmony to the facial features
- Enhances the results of rhinoplasty
- Highlight a person’s beauty
Recovery After Chin Augmentation Surgery
Most chin augmentation patients experience minimal discomfort and recover within a week. Light activities can start from the first day after the surgery, with the more strenuous exercise to be permitted after 3-4 weeks.
It is an outpatient procedure, which means patients do not need to stay overnight in the hospital or clinic unless combined with another plastic surgery, such as a nose job or neck lift. Dr Stavrou gives patients precise instructions for smooth and quick recovery.
Patients typically need to follow a diet rich in liquids. They need to sleep with their face looking up and their head elevated for a minimum of 1-2 weeks to protect their incisions and reduce post-op swelling. Skincare and sun protection are also necessary during the recovery period.
Results are long-term and there is always the choice to remove the implant if you wish.

FAQs for Chin Augmentation
How long does chin augmentation last? / Is chin augmentation permanent?
Chin augmentation with an implant can last for a lifetime. That is because chin implants are solid and durable so that they won’t shift or change position.
Chin augmentation results are permanent and won’t be affected by the natural aging process either.
Only a trauma or injury to the face could damage a chin implant.
Does chin augmentation improve jawline?
Chin implants are used to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance by improving the lower jaw's size, shape, and projection. They also help improve the jawline and neck’s contour.
Yet, patients concerned about loose skin, relaxed muscles and excess fat on the jawline, as a result of the natural aging process, should opt for a facelift, a neck lift or neck liposuction.
Is chin augmentation painful?
Chin augmentation surgery is done under local anesthesia and sedation, with the post-op pain being quite mild.
A feeling of discomfort is natural in chin implant surgery, just like with any other plastic surgery, and can be fully controlled with pain medication prescribed by your plastic surgeon.
Can your body reject a chin implant?
It is exceptionally rare for a patient to reject a chin implant, because silicone implants are inert in the human body.
Is chin augmentation safe?
Chin augmentation is a safe procedure when performed by an accredited, experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon.
The patient should follow the surgeon’s pre-operative and post-operative instructions to ensure successful results and a smooth and speedy recovery.
Patients who have an incision inside their mouth due to chin surgery need to be particularly careful and follow the surgeon’s post-op instructions as bacteria can accumulate in the mouth and cause infections.
