Overview
Fractured fingers and wrists frequently need surgical fixation with plates, screws or pins, which holds the alignment while the bone heals and reduces the risk of malunion or persistent instability.
Precise reconstruction of the joint surfaces is what helps prevent post-traumatic arthritis developing later.
Risks and considerations
Treating a hand or wrist fracture — whether it is set and splinted or fixed with wires, screws or a plate — carries the general risks of surgery where an operation is needed, and a set specific to fractures. Stiffness is the commonest problem, and hand therapy is usually important to recovery. A fracture can heal in a slightly imperfect position, or, less often, be slow to heal or fail to join. Metalwork can become prominent or irritating and occasionally needs removing once the bone has healed. Injury to nearby nerves or tendons, infection, and later stiffness or arthritis of an involved joint are the other risks.
