Pregnancy After a Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty does not involve the uterus or the ovaries and does not affect fertility. What it does affect is the timing of a pregnancy afterwards, the durability of the result, and the planning of a caesarean section.
This question is usually asked too late — after the operation has been booked. It is better raised at the first consultation, because a planned pregnancy changes the recommendation about when to have the surgery at all.
Fertility
Abdominoplasty operates on the abdominal wall: skin, fat and the rectus muscles. It does not involve the uterus or the ovaries. There is no evidence that it impairs fertility, and pregnancy remains possible afterwards.
How long to wait
The usual advice is to wait four to six months after surgery before trying to conceive. That allows the incisions to heal fully and the muscle repair to consolidate before the abdomen is subjected to the stretching of pregnancy.
During the pregnancy
There is no evidence that a previous abdominoplasty increases the risks of pregnancy. As the abdomen expands, the scar and the repaired muscle may feel tight. That sensation is expected and is not in itself harmful, but anything that worries you during a pregnancy should go to your obstetrician.
What happens to the result
In most cases the skin and muscle return towards their post-surgical state after delivery, and the result largely persists provided weight gain during the pregnancy was moderate. Some residual laxity in the lower abdomen is common and can be addressed with a revision procedure if it bothers you.
Caesarean section
This is the point that most often catches patients out. Surgeons generally advise against a planned caesarean after an abdominoplasty, because the caesarean incision overlaps the abdominoplasty scar. That overlap carries a raised risk of infection and a longer recovery.
If you have had an abdominoplasty, tell your obstetrician at the first appointment, not at the point of delivery planning. It is a factor in how the birth is planned.
The practical conclusion
If you intend to have children, the straightforward course is to have the abdominoplasty afterwards. If you have already had one and become pregnant, none of the above is a cause for alarm — it is a reason to make sure both your surgeon and your obstetrician know.
