History
Geri has medieval roots as a feudal lord’s territory depicted on Venetian maps. Its name derives from “Agerin,” meaning breezy hill, or “Gera,” Greek for bearing strong children – linked to the veneration of the Virgin Mary Chrysogeriotissa icon.
Development
Originally an agricultural village, Geri grew significantly in the 1990s due to refugees settling after Turkey’s invasion in 1974. Today it boasts residential areas and industrial zones with brick manufacturing, plastic production facilities, and animal food processing plants near key landmarks like the University and National Park.
Education
Geri values education with two public kindergartens, primary schools, and a gymnasium available to residents. The inclusive “Evangelismos” school caters specifically to children with special needs providing support for all learners.
Population
Geri’s population surged after the Turkish invasion, with refugees finding a new home in this welcoming neighborhood. It grew from hundreds to 2,500 by 1982 in just a few years. The subsequent years saw remarkable growth, nearly quadrupling due to regional development. A survey by the Geri Community Council estimates the population now exceeds 10,000.
