Discover the Cyprus Ethnological Museum, a cultural gem in Nicosia. This institution showcases Cypriot folk art from the 19th and 20th centuries with over 5,000 artifacts. Conveniently located near other cultural attractions like the Byzantine Museum of Cyprus and the National Struggle Museum, visitors can explore multiple points of interest in one area. The museum’s collections include woodcarvings, embroidery, pottery, national costumes, and more – some directly sourced from original owners. Notable highlights are St. Mamas’ door which inspired Giorgos Seferis to write “Little things of Cyprus,” and a wall painting depicting Athanasios Diakos at a coffee shop in Geri village.
The building has historical significance as it was originally created as a monastery in the 13th century before being passed on to the Greek Orthodox Church. It underwent several renovations incorporating architectural elements from different periods, including Archbishop Kyprianos’ room, where he stayed before his execution.
Despite temporary closures during conflicts and invasions by the Turkish Army in 1974, diligent efforts were made to preserve its collections throughout history since its founding by members of the Society of Cypriot Studies in 1937, residing initially at the Archbishop’s Palace until obtaining the Old Archbishopric building for activities supported by Archbishop Makarios III after construction of new seat for him.”
