Discover Aglantzia, a charming neighborhood nestled in Nicosia, Cyprus area. This article provides valuable information about its rich history, scenic beauty, and tips for making the most of your visit.
Aglantzia is a suburb and municipality of Nicosia with Turkish origins derived from “eğlence,” meaning entertainment. It has a population of approximately 20,783 (as of 2011) and offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural wonders.
Geographically located on hills and tablelands, it was historically constructed before Ottoman rule as a strategic site for defense, boasting abundant natural resources. Today it showcases lush green spaces, including Athalassa Forest, often called the “big lung” of Nicosia.
As you explore Aglantzia’s mix of traditional brick houses, narrow streets, and more recently constructed homes and blocks of flats, you’ll encounter an ambiance that reflects the diverse history and cultural heritage dating back thousands of years.
Notably, the medieval La Cava castle was constructed around 1385, serving as an observatory to monitor the road from Larnaca to Nicosia. Remnants still exist today, adding to its picturesque landscape.
After the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus, Aglantzia experienced a decline but later became a self-sufficient rural settlement in the late 18th century. The residents engaged in farming, stockbreeding, and quarrying. During significant historical events like the EOKA struggle and the 1974 Turkish invasion, Aglantzia played an active role with organized groups and volunteers.
